Katja Ryabtseva. Born in Moscow, raised in Cleveland, I now live and work in Columbus, OH. I’m a visual artist specializing in oil paintings, oil and chalk pastels, and charcoal.

Maybe it’s the Taurean part of me that can’t resist re-creating an atmosphere or a memory, just to bask or sulk in it a little longer. My works tend to orbit the gray in-between that can exist between perception and reality, where things tend to get a little cloudier.
What even is reality anyway, other than the mind’s eye?

I’m less interested in capturing what is and more in expressing what lingers behind. The glimmers of beauty or magic that somehow carry on, despite the horrors of our particular timeline. I want to create works that make you want to reach out and touch them, so I tend to paint expressively and let brushstrokes live their lives.
